Electric Ranges With Griddles –
A griddle is great cooking tool that any kitchen should have. There are generally two types of griddles—an electric griddle and a stove-top one. Both types of griddle basically have the same uses and there are no distinct differences between the two. Although it may seem that an electric griddle is more convenient, there are advantages to using a stove-top one. A stove-top griddle is quite easy to use and there are several techniques that you can follow. Stovetop griddles were originally made to be used on a gas stove, but they can also be used on an electric range.
Step 1: Preparing the Griddle
Place the stove top griddle on top of your stove. If you have a smooth, flat-top range do not slide it or you will damage the stove top. You will need at least 2 burners for this job depending on how big your griddle is. Position the griddle on top of 2 burners that are closest to each other. Given the uneven size of the burners on an electric stove, you may want to consider the smaller, single burner griddle. Turn the burners on to the desired temperature.
Step 2: Heating the Stove Top Griddle
You will need to wait for the griddle to be heated through before you can use it. Otherwise, you will end up with sections of the griddle that are hotter than others. There are several ways you can check if the griddle is hot enough or is ready for cooking. The first is to see if there is smoke starting to come off the griddle. This means that the griddle is hot enough to begin cooking. However, it is important t remember that the griddle should not be too hot. This will result to too much smoke once you start cooking. The other way to test if a griddle is hot enough is to splash a few drops of water onto the griddle. If the water starts to sizzle or bubble then the griddle is ready.
Step 3: Preparing the Griddle for Cooking
Once the griddle is ready for cooking, turn the heat of the larger burner to medium to low or until it gives off the same heat as the smaller one. This is to have an even cooking heat on your griddle. You will need to apply a thin layer of fat on the griddle pan to prevent the food from sticking. You can omit this part if the griddle is hot enough but applying fat will even out the heat across the pan. There are several fat that you can use. You can use any cooking oil like olive oil or vegetable oil. You can also smear a small amount of butter until it melts or spray on some cooking oil. Make sure that the fat you are using coats the griddle pan evenly.
Step 4: Cooking on the Griddle
After you have put on the fat, you can start cooking on the stove top griddle according the instructions or the recipe. It is advisable to apply more fat in between food especially if you are cooking in multiple batches. If the fat starts to smoke, then lower the heat to medium or low. You can cook almost anything on a stove top griddle, like eggs, pancakes, omelets, vegetables and all sorts of meat.
